♢ You don’t want no drama. No no drama. No no no no drama. Drama in character is fine, but out of character is not. Anyone who is found to be starting drama will be given two warnings before being asked to leave the game.
♢ If you have a problem with another player that you cannot resolve yourself, please alert the mods and we will speak with each of you and attempt to settle the issue as best we can.
♢ Every player is expected to be at least moderately active. Each character should have at least three (3) instances of activity each month. The mods understand that real life happens and we are willing to work with you if this is not possible. However, if you are consistently not meeting activity requirements, your characters may be dropped and you will not be allowed to apply for more characters until your activity improves to the minimum level.
♢ Instances of activity include:
→ a log with at least 3 comments from each character (6 comments total)
→ a comment thread on another’s net post of at least 3 comments
→ a communication log of at least 3 comments from each character (6 total)
♢ It is important to promote interaction between all characters, even those who would not normally interact. Therefore, there shouldn’t be a net post without a comment on it. Put yourself out there!
♢ All posts on the log community should have a header in this format:
WHO: The characters in the scene (no ship names) WHAT: A short summary of the thread. This may be updated if the direction of the thread changes. WHERE: The location of the thread. WHEN: The date and time of the thread WARNINGS: Any relevant warnings for the content of the thread, including mentions of potentially triggering material and/or anything that is NSFW.
♢ Posts in the net community do not require a header. However, if the post is to be visible only to a certain character or characters, it must be marked PRIVATE in the subject line followed by the character or characters’ name(s) and their roles. No ship names, please. Example: Private to Bucky (native) and Steve (canon)
♢ Posts in the comm community do not require a header. However, the nature of the communication (email, voicemail, text, etc) should be stated in the subject line, as well as the name(s) of the recipient(s) and their roles - no ship names, please. Example: Text to Spartacus (native)
♢ Currently there is no numerical cap on characters. The number of characters a player is allowed is dependent upon their activity levels (see above). The mods reserve the right to cap any player who is only doing the bare minimum amount of activity month after month.
♢ Because this game is largely driven by activity between both canon and native characters, we want to keep a relatively even number of each. Thus, a player is allowed two (2) characters without limitations as to whether they are native or canon, or what fandom they come from. Their third character should come from a canon that exists in the game but can be either native or canon. Their fourth character should be a match to an existing character. Any characters after this will start the cycle over. This is to give smaller fandoms some chance for activity.
♢ You cannot play both the native and canon versions of a character, nor can you play any other character who would have close contact with your own (siblings, friends, teammates, etc).
♢ Please do not apply solely for the purpose of a ship and/or a single fandom. We encourage play between all characters regardless of what universe they belong to. That's what makes RP fun!
♢ Applications should be filled out as completely as possible. We don’t need a novel, but a single sentence will also not be accepted. By the time we finish reading their profile, we should know your character as well as you do.
♢ Characters must be held BEFORE their application is submitted, and the native character and castmates of your character must be contacted.
♢ Canon characters do not have to contact the castmates of their native character and vice versa.
♢ Not every castmate has to be contacted. If the cast is very large, only the characters that your character would conceivably have a relationship with must be contacted. This includes any family, friends, teammates, etc.
♢ Attempt of contact is what counts. If you do not receive a reply from your castmate(s) within a reasonable amount of time, and can provide datestamped proof that attempt was made, we will consider this attempted contact and allow the application to go through.
♢ Once a character is held, they will be held for 7 days. An extension of 48 hours will be granted if requested. After that, the hold will expire and the character will once again be available for anyone to hold. Indefinite holds are not permitted, and if you attempt to hold a character more than twice in a row, your hold will be denied.
♢ Characters are on a first-come, first-serve basis. No challenges will be permitted.
♢ Canon puncturing is defined as a canon character having awareness/being made aware of the fact that they are a character in a work of fiction. If you want your character to be canon punctured, they will be able to see people talking about them on the network, hear people having conversations about them, and be aware of their media and merchandise. If you do NOT want your character to be punctured, then the glamour over the town will prevent this - people will not recognize them as their characters, they will just not notice posts or conversations about their fandom, and their memory will suddenly become foggy about events where they were exposed to their media.
Frequently Asked Questions
Are OCs allowed?
♢ At the moment, OCs are not currently allowed. The mods will update the community and rules if OCs should be allowed at any point in the future.
How many canon characters can there be? How many natives?
♢ There can be only one. Any given canon character can have only one version of themselves - meaning that even if there are several different canons for them (for example, the Marvel comics have a different canon than the Marvel movies), there can be only one character. Likewise, there can be only one native character to match them. We do not currently have a cap on the number of canon or native characters, though due to the nature of the game we would prefer to have it as balanced as possible. Thus, if someone is getting a little too heavy on one side, we will ask them to make characters from the other before apping any more from their heavy side.
So what is the difference between a canon character and a native character?
♢ A canon character is exactly what you’d expect - someone from media that we know and love, as they are. Their native character is their counterpoint, a person who is in the regular world. Native characters have no powers, no super weapons or special items that give them any kind of supernatural abilities. They only have what any normal human might.
♢ A native character does not necessarily have to have the exact same past as a canon character - obviously, for some, this would be very difficult to do. However, whether you would like to mirror their canon history or go in an entirely different direction is up to you.
I want to bring in a character but my canon castmates are at a different canon point than I want. Do I have to go from that point too?
♢ Nope! However, it is advisable that the players speak OOC about whether or not their characters will “spoil” any castmates who are behind them - meaning that they will talk with them about things that are in their future.
What about inhuman characters, or characters who are from a cartoon/video game/etc?
♢ Totally allowed! However, every character must have a human PB - no exceptions. However, cartoon/anime/video game characters may have some icons from the source material, since trying to find accurate PBs can occasionally be difficult.
♢ Inhuman characters will keep their inhuman features, but a glamour over the town ensures that natives (and characters from canons that aren’t their own) won’t be able to see them. Eventually, their native doppelganger will be able to see these features after spending enough time with their canon.
My canon character wouldn’t canonically speak English, or comes from an era that didn’t speak modern English. Will they only be able to speak to people who understand their language?
♢ Nope! The glamour also ensures that characters who are unable to speak or understand the beauty that is modern English will be able to communicate with everyone else and vice versa.
♢ However, if your character chooses to speak or write in a non-English language, please write it in English, make a note of the language, and italicize the text. This makes it easier for people who don't speak that language to understand what your character is saying! Please do not use hovertext, as this does not work on mobile devices. A word or two, such as a nickname, is fine, but anything longer than that needs to be written in this format.
I’m playing an anime character, do they have to be Asian?
♢ PBs should be of an appropriate ethnicity to the character. Most anime characters are Japanese, but, for example, most of the characters in Attack on Titan are of European descent and Asian PBs would not be accepted for them.
♢ That said, if your character does not have a set appearance (they are inhuman or are from a book and their race isn’t mentioned, etc), then PBs of any race will be considered if they do share noted characteristics (example: Hermione’s hair is described as being bushy, therefore any character with bushy hair would be considered). These characters will have the Retcon Rule applied to them if dropped (see below).
♢ Only characters in live-action media (movies, television shows, etc) will be expected to have the same PB. Characters from cartoons, anime, video games, literature, etc., do NOT have to have the same PB unless the players want to. However, both PBs must match the described appearance of the character.
What about younger characters? Are they allowed?
♢ If you think that you can be active with them, yes! However, PBs must also be able to pass for the appropriate age (ex: James McAvoy won’t pass for a 17 year old, sorry) OR if they are only going to be used while at a certain age (ex: Pete Wentz ca. 2005). Additionally, underage characters will be required to live with a guardian.
♢ Additionally, we ask that no romantic and/or sexual relationships happen with anyone younger than 16.
My character would like to be a guardian to a younger character, how old do they have to be?
♢ Characters who wish to be guardians have to be at least 21 years old. For anyone seeking to have a character be their guardian, please contact the player of that character and, upon agreement, contact the mods via the dropbox.
♢ If an underage character cannot find anyone to be their guardian, then it is permissable for that character to have NPC guardians.
When my canon character comes into this world are they going to be naked or something?
♢ Nope! Characters are permitted to have the clothes on their backs and anything that was in their hands and/or pockets at the time that they came in, within reason. This means that any items that come with them are limited to items that would fit on their person and that they would have on them at any given time - no conveniently having a super powerful item they wouldn’t normally have access to. For example, Harry Potter would have his wand with him, because he is shown to almost always have it in hand or on his person. However, a character who was driving at the time that they transitioned over would not have their car with them.
Are the canon characters going to be left out in the cold when they come into this world?
♢ Canon characters will be taken care of by an unnamed government agency. Upon first arrival, they will be housed at an apartment building for one month, as well as given a cell phone and laptop and a small amount of money to start them off. After that, they will be expected to take care of themselves.
Are pregnancy lines allowed?
♢ Nope, sorry. If one character is dropped it makes things hard in the future, not to mention they can often overtake the game.
How about serial killer characters/vampires who have to kill for food/etc?
♢ Yes, within reason. They can’t go on a murder spree and they can’t kill a canon character, only faceless NPCs. Additionally, please tag your posts as is appropriate.
My character has something in their past that might be bothersome to someone else, is that allowed?
♢ Yes. Life isn’t always sunshine and roses, even in fiction, and this is a mature game and thus may contain subjects such as abuse, sexual assault, and other triggering aspects. Please add warnings to your posts and put any upsetting material under a cut and tag your posts as is appropriate.
I want to play a customizable character, is that allowed?
♢ Absolutely! Characters with a customizable appearance (such as the Inquisitor from Dragon Age) are allowed in the game, and will be allowed with any PB of an appropriate age. However, if the character is merely one with a customizable name, like Link or Cloud, their default name must be used.
I don’t know my character’s [full name, age, birthdate]!
♢ That’s okay! Not every character has these given in canon.
→ For the name: if a full name is not given, or the character goes only by a nickname, what you have is acceptable. You don’t have to make one up.
→ For the age: if an exact age isn’t given, guesstimate. “Early 20’s” or “late 30s” is acceptable.
→ For the birthdate: if one isn’t given in canon, then this can be ignored.
I don’t want to play my character anymore, can I kill them?
♢ No. If you no longer wish to play a character, you need to drop them. Please do so by contacting the mods via dropbox or email and giving them official notice. Please do not just delete your journals or only say something in chat or in a post on the OOC community. You do not have to give a reason as to why you are dropping, but if it is something wrong with the comm itself please let us know so we can fix it.
I want to pick up a character who was dropped, do I have to pick up their previous lines as well?
♢ Nope! Unfortunately we are going to have to handwave this a little bit, but because not every player is going to be comfortable with every line, we are going to retcon all existence of a dropped character. The new player is certainly allowed to pick up from the drop point if they like, but should not feel pressured into it - players who had lines with the previous player can certainly bring them up, though!
My character’s canon is still ongoing and something major happened! Can I update their canon history?
♢ Yes! You can update your character’s canon once every two months, and each time you may update to the current point in canon (i.e., for a weekly TV show, you may update for all episodes aired to that point). Canon updating comes in the form of dreams, so characters are aware of what has happened but it doesn’t change anything for them in this world. Thus, if a character is injured or killed, it does not affect them.
My character wants to leave the area. Are they allowed?
♢ Yes! There aren’t bars around the town or a force field keeping them in. But they will have a nagging feeling that tells them to stay, and if they are gone for too long they will feel an irresistible pull to return to the town.
